Educating in values is not only transmitting good manners. It is also important to teach them to distinguish good attitudes from bad and to help them develop moral conscience. In this sense, short films are audiovisual pieces that are very useful for us to work with children and several of them can be an excellent starting point for reflection on values and their importance.

With them, children can reflect on friendship, solidarity, teamwork, respect for people, etc. Let’s start with these 5 very interesting short films to work on different values:

Cuerdas

The Lost Thing

Es un llamado de atención al estilo de vida que llevamos y que, muchas veces, no nos deja ver lo que le ocurre a las personas que tenemos alrededor y sus problemas. En 2011 esta cinta consiguió el Premio Oscar al mejor corto animado.

In times when the family is reunited at home, it is very important to maintain a loving and cordial relationship between everyone. And for that it is worth reviewing some tips such as those offered by Educrea (Chile) for parents of girls and boys with intellectual disabilities.

All children need time and peace of mind to deal with them. Thus, with young children with intellectual disabilities, the same procedure should be followed, bearing in mind that their learning is a little slower than that of other children. With effort and dedication they reach the goal. Here are some of the tips:

– Find out as much as possible about Intellectual Disability. The more you know, the more you can help yourself and your child.

– Promote independence. For example, help your child learn daily grooming skills such as dressing, eating alone, using the bathroom, and shaving.

– Give your child homework. Be aware of your age, attention span, and abilities. Divide the tasks into steps. For example, if the task is to set the table, ask her to first pull out the appropriate number of napkins. Then put a napkin on each station. Do the same with the cutlery, one by one. Explain what to do, step by step. Show him how to do it. Help him when necessary.

– Find out what skills your child is learning at school. Find ways to apply those skills at home. For example, if the teacher is working on money management, take your child to the supermarket. Help him count the money to pay the bill and count the change.

– Look for opportunities within your community for social activities. This will help your child develop social skills and have fun.

– Talk to other parents whose children have intellectual disabilities. They will be able to share practical advice and provide emotional support.

– Meet with the school and develop an educational plan to address your child’s needs. Stay in touch with your child’s teachers. Offer your support and find out how you can reinforce your child’s school learning at home.

Among the various methods that exist for people with intellectual disabilities or cognitive disabilities to improve their abilities are games. This is a fun way and with very good results.

Hopscotch

It is a traditional game that aims to develop basic motor skills.

In the dream, boxes with numbers are drawn. Then the participants stand behind box number 1 and with an object in hand, they will throw it inside the drawing and they will have to go and pick it up by jumping on one foot in the single boxes and on two in the double ones. When you pick up the item you will return to the starting box in the same way. The process is repeated number by number.

Drawings with ribbons in space

The necessary material to carry out this activity is a set of rhythmic gymnastic tapes. The game consists of making different movements or, failing that, that can imitate the movements made by their companions.

Siamese with ball

It stimulates balance, the ability to establish strategies and cooperation.

It consists of taking a relay tour in pairs carrying a ball held by the forehead of the members of the couple. The winning team is the one that finishes the course without cheating before. If it falls, it starts again where it fell.

Carrying sleepers

Stimulates motor skills and strength. It is a team game and mats are needed. In turn, one of the players will become a sleeper. He will stretch out on the mat and wait for the rest of the group to take him for a ride. His teammates will stand right where he has his head or feet and drag him around the gym. The role of sleeper will be changed until all group members have participated.

The statue

Individual balance, dynamic coordination and reflexes are encouraged

It is played in groups. Whoever is in charge gives a signal after which all the participants will have to remain motionless, petrified. The person who moves loses. It is repeated as many times as necessary until a winner remains.

Bomb with a ball

It serves to enhance speed and basic motor skills.

All participants are placed in a circle and are passing a ball clockwise. There is another person who stays in the middle and counts to the number established before starting. When the count is over, the person left with the ball will be penalized by becoming in the center of the circle.

The game of chairs

Stimulates auditory perception with basic motor skills.

Several ordered chairs are located, in a smaller number than the participants in the game. You need music that is heard as those who play spin the chairs clockwise. When the music stops they will have to sit down quickly avoiding being the last. Whoever comes in last will be eliminated.

Since the beginning of April, this alternative has been on the air to strengthen homeschooling in times of preventive isolation. ‘My signal’ began broadcasting gradually through the channels of the Public Media System and in liaison with regional channels.

This educational project that reaches millions of families, through television and public radio, is seen by Señal Colombia, the signal of DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) and Telecaribe, Teleantioquia, Telecafé, Canal TRO, Telepacífico, Canal Trece and Teleislas, which will incorporate the content of ‘education-entertainment’ into the programming grid gradually.

This is one more government action that seeks to strengthen learning strategies with flexible methodologies to provide boys, girls, youth and their families with diverse content in different media and formats to promote the continuity of the educational service during the period of learning at home.

‘My Signal’ is organized in three programming blocks:

From 7:00 a.m. m. at 9:30 a.m. m., aimed at children between 0 and 9 years old and offers special content that mixes education and entertainment.

From 9:30 a.m. m. at 1:00 p.m. m., is aimed at boys and girls between 8 and 12 years old.

From 1:00 p. m. at 6:00 p. m., is aimed at adolescents and young people from 13 to 17 years old, who will be able to enjoy documentaries and audiovisual content that support the research.

Accompaniment to teachers

To strengthen the learning processes of students during Mandatory Preventive Isolation or National Quarantine, the Ministry of Education also develops ‘Connected to learning’, a strategy that will make educational content, such as illustrative guides and explanatory videos, available to teachers to help generate capacities in the use and appropriation of digital tools in learning processes.

There are multiple situations that demonstrate that the world is not intended for people with cognitive disabilities or intellectual disabilities during quarantine, but the Tobías Emanuel Institute has been finding answers for the vast majority of them.

This global situation, which recommends confinement and care at home, has shown multiple difficulties for all and has also represented a challenge for institutions in which, like Tobías Emanuel, work with people with intellectual disabilities or cognitive disabilities.

The use of technology and virtual education, for example, tends to be thought of as a barrier that could leave them behind in their educational programs. However, at the Tobías Emanuel Institute various communication resources have been used with all possible platforms: WhatsApp, YouTube, Classroom, personalized calls and other resources that guarantee constant communication with students and participants from their homes.

See also: We are at home because of the coronavirus and so we continue studying in the Tobías Emanuel

It seeks to involve families to the fullest with talks, consultancies, home visits and multiple accompaniments, which allows distance and the fact of not having a face-to-face job, not to be a barrier with the families of the Institute. All of our plans have been adapted to the needs of each student and according to the feedback of the parents.

So that premise that indicates that the world is not ready to serve virtually disabled people, has been the challenge that we assume and that we are overcoming, being recursive with platforms, providing families with various devices that allow them to access programs from home and even internet connections that guarantee access to them.

Working with its own methodology, the Tobías Emanuel Institute refines the pedagogical model that has worked in the last two decades and is now taking it to virtual platforms to give it a greater and better scope and continue to specialize the successful work that is recognized with the population with cognitive or intellectual disabilities.

Within what is coming, we are preparing workshops, courses and diplomas to teach online. The institution is organizing to continue operating virtually in a solid, sustained, strong way and consolidating its model.
