Skills For Older Adults

It is the program we have for people of ages who are no longer in special school. We seek to give them an occupational space that also serves to enhance skills that have yet to be discovered.

Said Advancement Program is under the coordination of Ana María Arango. She, artist and singer, has more than two years of experience in the work. He came to her because of the artistic closeness and because he considers that this is a very practical way to reach them. “It allows them to express themselves in a non-verbal way and communicate things that they have inside, with all their potential and capabilities,” she says.

The work in the Advancement Program is currently carried out with people between 42 and 63 years old. However, it also includes youth from the age of 20. They have also been received. You are welcome!

Benefits for those who join the Advancement Program

“The greatest achievement we have had is to help them in their personal empowerment. Give them the security of knowing that they are capable of doing things on their own. Because of their condition, sometimes in families they are overprotected and treated like children. Here we teach them that they can achieve better things every time. We seek to motivate them to discover themselves in new things, without feeling frustrated. Personal empowerment is our greatest achievement”, says Ana María Arango.

The main idea, due to their ages, is to maintain a cognitive level that helps them so that their natural biological deterioration is not very strong. The achievement is keeping them active and each year having a great exhibition where they can show their families the things they manage to do with such dedication.

Hours and activities

This work is carried out from Monday to Friday, from 9 in the morning to 2:30 in the afternoon. The beneficiaries have classes of:

  • Dances
  • Music
  • Painting
  • Crafts
  • Literacy
  • Theater
  • Body expression
  • They also have spaces for activities outside the institution: exhibitions, cinema, etc.

“We are looking for spaces to talk and to express their feelings, emotions, frustrations and sadness in order to help, as a group, to strengthen people,” says Ana María.

The Tobías Emanuel Institute is presented as an ideal space to carry out the Avancemos Program. It has green areas, courts and swimming pool. “They highlight the change. Having other boys in space has helped them a lot. That helps them get out of the bubble and see other realities. It helps them in social development,” adds the coordinator.

This program is open for enrollment.
